Though it has been around for over a quarter of a century, Microsoft Excel is still one of the most important and popular pieces of software used in the modern workplace. Easy to use and highly functional, it integrates easily with other Microsoft Office programmes (the suite of which itself is the most widely used programme set available) and is the spreadsheet programme of choice across the globe.

Knowing how to create, or at least navigate, Excel spreadsheets is a skill that is often expected that you possess, and is essential if your role involves creating charts and graphs, data input or working with budgets. The Excel Diploma Course offers an extensive overview of Microsoft Excel, from the fundamentals to the most advanced features, and teaches by getting students to work in the software package as they progress through the course; presenting exercises related to what has been taught.

By the end of the course, you will know how to:

  • Navigate through the Excel environment
  • Enter and edit data
  • Save and share your worksheets and workbooks
  • Write simple and complex formulas
  • Make powerful calculations with Excel functions
  • Understand, create and use dynamic reports such as PivotTables
  • Find values with VLOOKUP
  • Sort and filter your data
  • Format your data so that it is professional-looking, powerful and accessible
  • Visually represent your data through charts, graphs and other graphics

The course uses Excel 2013 for Windows, though Excel 2016 was released at the end of 2015.

Microsoft has been with us since 1985 and is used globally; entrenched in business processes worldwide. The 1st module of the course offers a brief history of what is quite possibly the most important computer package ever made, discussing its main advantages and its multifarious uses in business. Upon finishing module 1, students will have a better understanding of MS Excel and why it remains an integral part of business practice around the world.

If you are completely new to Excel, then it can seem quite daunting when you first open the programme. To allay your fears, module 2 focusses on helping students to become comfortable navigating around the Excel environment easily and efficiently.

With students now comfortable with the environment in which they shall be working, module 3 of the Excel Diploma Course moves onto teaching the basic skills needed to use the programme, and which the comprehension of will lay the foundations for further knowledge imparted throughout the course.

Now that students have a grasp of how to move around worksheets and perform basic functions, the 4th module moves into formatting spreadsheets. This is not just for aesthetic reasons (though good formatting can certainly have that affect) but to ensure data is organised in a clear and comprehensible way, so that it is immediately accessible to other users. You will be guided through the various formatting tools; being shown how to work effectively with fonts, colours, borders and patterns, as well as managing the size and content of your cells.

One of the reasons that Microsoft Excel is so widely used is due to its ability to calculate simple, complex, and repetitive calculations quickly and easily across a worksheet that is capable of containing a vast about of information (1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns, to be precise). There is no single way of doing this, which allows users of the programme to choose the method/s that best suit them and their current workload. The 5th module of the Excel Diploma Course takes students through carrying out easy calculations, before delving deeper into more sophisticated methods of calculation at the end of the module.

Moving into MS Excel’s more advanced functions, the 6th module discusses the use of formulas and functions; unlocking the power of the programme and enhancing the abilities and proficiency of students.

Whether analysing information in your own worksheets or going through the work of others, you will likely want to find specific information among a mass of data. Module 7 of the Excel Diploma Course teaches students how to use the Sort and Filtering tools to aid in finding and engaging with the specific data you need; using different types of sorting and methods of filtering.

When comparing information from various workbooks, it can be a lot easier, and more professional, to use charts and graphs to represent the data within. The 8th module of the course explains how to use Excel’s various charts, to create visual impact and meaningful representations of the information your using/presenting. Additionally, the module also covers how to use Pivot Tables, sparklines and tables, and how to include imagery in your worksheets.

Using Excel for different functions will require you to be able to look at either focussed data or many different groups of information at the same time. This is where Microsoft Excel’s various viewing tools make things a lot easier, with the ability to inhibit rows and columns from moving up and off the screen when you scroll, split your worksheet in two, or open multiple windows at the same time. The final module of the Excel Diploma Course explains how to use these tools, as well as prepare and print your workbooks for off-line viewing.
